My Story

My name is Morag Smith and I'm a geologist.  I grew up in the historic town of Arbroath, Scotland immersed in the local fishing heritage and from an early age I knew I wanted to work in the earth sciences.  I studied at St. Andrews University then Camborne School of Mines before starting work as an exploration geologist underground at Boubly Mine in North Yorkshire.  I was the 1st female they had ever employed to work in their technical team.  I then moved to Australia where mining was booming at the time and worked as geologist in mineral exploration in the Outback of Australia then moved into petroleum exploration for a number of years.  It was such a privilege to be able to experience the wilds of the Australian Outback and work with so many amazing locals.

My husband and I had our first daughter in Australia and soon after decided that we needed a new adventure in our lives so moved back to Scotland to bring up our children and be near family.  We had another daughter once settled back in Arbroath and are having great fun bringing them up on the East Coast of Scotland and rediscovering this part of the world as a family.  I developed an idea to start walking tours in Angus while still living in Australia wanting to promote the geology of our land bringing the stories to life and sharing them with the public.  This is how Stories of Stone was born.  It is a new venture only having started in 2024 but already we have taken many people out to the cliffs in Arbroath to help bring awareness to this hidden gem in Scotland.

About Stories of Stone

Uncover the secrets of the past

At Stories of Stone, we are passionate about sharing our love for the Earth's story.  We offer guided walking tours that not only showcase the stunning scenery of the coast but also provide in-depth knowledge of the local geology, earth science, and history.  Our tours are designed to be engaging, educational, and enjoyable for all ages

Green Credentials

Stories of Stone proudly aligns its mission with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We aim to minimize our environmental impact during our walks and to educate the public on important topics such as climate change. Additionally, we encourage women and girls to pursue STEM subjects.

Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote well-being for all and at all ages

Our walks provide an opportunity to get out into nature in the outdoors promoting well-being for all.  The geology stories bring a sense of perspective for ourselves in this sometimes crazy world, encouraging a slower pace and an appreciation for the landscape around us.

Ensure Inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

One of the main aims of Stories of Stone is education.  A subject as important as geology is often not taught in schools and has resulted in many requiring a better understanding in the world around us, in climate change, and how we impact the landscape.

Achieve gender quality and empower all women and girls

As a woman who has spent my entire career in a historically male-dominated industry, gender equality is a subject that is very important to me. I strive to promote STEM subjects, such as geology, to young girls and women who may be discovering these subjects later in life through Stories of Stone.

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

Understanding the land is one of the most important messages Stories of Stone looks to achieve.  On our walks we strive to leave as little impact on the environment as possible and educating the public about sustainability and our impact on the landscape throughout time is one of the key takeaways we hope to instill.
